So here we are, all ready to go a-steeking! The ends from changing colour at the centre front where each round starts have been pulled to the right side of the work and trimmed to about 1/2 inch.
You can just see my double pass of green hand basting there in the "ditch" created by the purl stitch at each end of every round. I added two knit stitches between these purls for wiggle room and I'm glad I did.Let the cutting begin!
I'm cutting between my two added knit stitches. You can see one on the right - the other of course is on the left at the edge of the folded back section. There's another peek at my basting line too. Up...
And up...
To the top...
And its done!
Ta Da!
Now, with all the ends cut off I don't have to sew any in I can move right along to basting the zipper in place.
...and dreaming about what my next steeked project might be...
Thanks for joining me in my little adventure today!
Gasp! That was scary to just see the pictures...I can't imagine actually cutting into knitting...especially something so involved. Wow! You have courage! But, it looks like you had it all figured out and knew what you were doing. I'm so impressed with this project! It's amazing! You are inspiring! Can't wait to see the final, finished project! Wow!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great post, Marie. I was having trouble understanding why the tails were running down the centre front when you explained it to me on Friday. But now I understand - that was the beginning/end of the round. How clever. Hope the zipper goes well.
ReplyDeleteI'm with Acorn to Oak, I don't think I could have made the first cut. It looks amazing, and ever so daring of you. As always I'm so blown away with the photos.
ReplyDeleteI was also impressed when you kept frogging at the top because you didn't like the colour combination.
This is looking so good. I think all your concern to get the colours just right has really paid off. A great achievement.
ReplyDeleteHoly Cow - I am impressed beyond belief. I was wondering when you were going to get around to cutting that steek - and worrying how it would go. Thanks for the photos too, somehow it doesn't seem so scary now.

I had to hold my breath through your post. Very brave indeed. I can't wait to see the FO!
ReplyDeleteThis is an amazing sweater and then comes the steeking!
ReplyDeleteI would love to try this someday.
Congratulations! Everything went as planned and looks absolutely gorgeous, public and private sides, both a joy.
ReplyDeleteAll good wishes with the zipper instalation.
Then wearing and collecting well deserved compliments.
Your "how to" pics give me confidence
After listening to you talk about it Monday night I was very intrigued. This post is amazing - great pictures! Verrrry Scaaaarrrry!
ReplyDeleteWow, good job! I am so scared of cutting my knitting that I never tried something with a steek. But I would so much love to give it a try - perhaps it would be good to drink a glass of wine before? Thinking of it, I have already cut my knitting to rescue a wrong cable way down in the pattern. Might really consider it...
